Who knew there was more to rock posters than a picture of (insert the name of your favorite 60s rock band) surrounded by wavy neon colors and psychedelic imagery? Israeli-born, Canadian-based Director Eileen Yaghoobian did. After her brother died, Yaghoobian discovered the website gigposters.com and the indie rock poster community. A community far from the 60s, its populated by a subculture of renegade graphic artists who push the art beyond its traditional use as an advertising tool of the music industry to a medium infused with rebellion, irony and sometimes, pornography. DIED YOUNG, STAYED PRETTY is shot in a raw, uncontrolled, non-traditional style, mirroring the visual and verbal rants of its subject. The featured artists are huge in their world and unknown outside of it, often working for little to no pay. Like HELVETICA (HIFF 2008) - a documentary about the typography, DIED YOUNG, STAYED PRETTY takes a distinct and interesting look at an obscure form of graphic design and visual culture. - Tanisha Brown
