Chinatown is an evocative place. It exists in our cities and our imaginations, on our television screens and in our memories. Chinatown is a vibrant, sprawling immigrant community and a forgotten strip mall of buffet restaurants; it's the exploited Hollywood metaphor and yet a dense signifier of American noir.
THE CHINATOWN FILM PROJECT (CFP) tackles Chinatown's elusiveness and its stereotyped representations by constructing new images for the viewer. The project started in New York City, where some of the NYC’s most exciting filmmakers were asked to present their unique vision of this global icon.
Now, it's our turn. HIFF, partnering with Showdown in Chinatown, presents an outdoor screening of CFP shorts from NYC as well as locally made award-winning shorts from the September edition of Showdown, right in the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. So come and watch the films, represent, and share in the pride of Honolulu's unique take on Chinatown.
October 23 at 7PM
Outdoor screening at 1021 Smith Street (between King Street and Hotel Street)
